GLP-1 care and Irish health insurance

Compare what public Vhi, Laya, Irish Life Health and Aviva-backed Level Health documents establish about appointments, medicine costs and policy checks.

The answer before you budget

Ask your insurer two questions: is this consultation covered, and is this medicine cost covered? A GP benefit or access to an online prescription service does not prove reimbursement for the medicine. Your plan, policy year, provider, indication and exclusions determine the claim.

Irish Life Health: a defined consultation benefit

On selected plans, Specialist Weight Loss Support through HealthHero fully covers an eligible initial consultation and contributes €17.50 towards each of six follow-ups, leaving €17.50 per follow-up payable by the member. It is subject to the programme's eligibility and policy terms.

Irish Life Health: Specialist Weight Loss Support

Irish Life Health explicitly excludes the cost of prescribed medicine from this programme. It says another outpatient or day-to-day benefit may be relevant, so check your own table of cover. The same consultation expense cannot be claimed again under another GP benefit.

Vhi: check the policy exclusion as well as the benefit

Vhi publishes rules by effective date, including an October 2026 version. Use the rules for your own policy together with its table of benefits. We have not verified a current medicine-specific Vhi benefit. Ask whether a weight-management or drug exclusion affects the named appointment and medicine, even where your table includes a general GP allowance. Get a written cover decision before paying.

Laya: a consultation allowance can coexist with no prescription cover

As one public example, Laya's Health Secure Plus table lists GP and consultant benefits but no prescription-cost cover. It also has an outpatient excess and an annual limit. This illustrates separate benefit categories; it does not confirm a weight-management consultation is eligible or describe every Laya plan. Check your own rules, exclusions and accepted provider with Laya.

Aviva-backed Level Health: use the current plan documents

Aviva's current Irish health-insurance page directs customers to Level Health. Check the Level Health plan name on your policy rather than relying on an old Aviva Health document. Level publishes separate policy rules and tables of cover by effective date.

Level's Plan A page advertises GP and online-service benefits, including an online prescription service. That describes access to a service; it does not establish that a GLP-1 medicine's pharmacy cost is paid. We have not verified a medicine-specific benefit for this route. Ask Level about the exact expense, provider and indication.

A precise request for a cover decision

Use your insurer's secure member channel. Give the plan and renewal date, clinician or service, the purpose of the consultation, the exact medicine and the itemised costs. Describe each expense accurately; changing invoice wording does not create cover.

  • Which benefit, if any, covers each item?
  • Does a weight-management or medicine exclusion apply?
  • Must I use a particular provider or obtain approval first?
  • What excess, percentage, per-visit limit and annual limit apply?
  • Will a contribution be paid directly, or must I claim after paying?

After an insurer pays part of the bill

Keep the claim statement alongside the receipt. Any tax-relief calculation must exclude the insurer's contribution and any other reimbursement. Do not count a possible claim as received money when comparing your immediate outlay.

Could GLP-1 treatment suit you?

The quiz explains adult treatment criteria. It cannot approve HSE funding, insurance cover or tax relief. Three questions, about two minutes. See your BMI band against the criteria Irish providers publish.
