What are GLP-1 weight loss injections?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists are a class of medications that work by mimicking a hormone your body naturally produces after eating. They reduce appetite, slow digestion, and help you feel fuller for longer. In clinical trials, they have been shown to produce significant, sustained weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes.

How much do GLP-1 injections cost in Ireland?

Costs usually have two parts: the consultation or prescription fee, and the medicine price charged by the pharmacy. Some routes publish an all-in table; others do not publish the pharmacy price. Compare the source-checked provider rows above and confirm the final total before paying.

Am I eligible for GLP-1 weight loss injections?

Generally, you are eligible if you have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea. A doctor will assess your full medical history before prescribing.

Is Ozempic available for weight loss in Ireland?

No. Ozempic (semaglutide) is only licenced in Ireland for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss. If you are looking for semaglutide for weight loss, the correct medication is Wegovy, which contains the same active ingredient but at a higher dose and with a weight loss licence.

Do I need a GP referral to get GLP-1 injections?

No — all the online providers listed on this site offer their own medical consultation as part of the process. You do not need a referral from your GP, though it is always a good idea to let your GP know about any new medication you are starting.
