Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide 2.4mg, a once-weekly injectable medication approved specifically for chronic weight management in adults. It was developed by Novo Nordisk, the same company behind Ozempic, and launched in Ireland in March 2025.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which is released after eating. This can help people feel fuller, slow gastric emptying, and reduce appetite. Effects vary by patient and should be monitored by a qualified prescriber.
Clinical trials report averages across groups, not a personal forecast. Results, tolerability and the appropriate dose vary and need clinical review.
A common question: is Wegovy just Ozempic rebranded? The answer is no. They share the same active ingredient (semaglutide) but are distinct products:
In Ireland, Wegovy is the semaglutide product licensed for weight management. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes. If you are looking for semaglutide for weight management, ask a clinician about Wegovy and whether it is suitable for you.

The EMA product information, section 4.2 permits 7.2 mg only if needed in adults whose BMI was at least 30 when treatment began, after at least four weeks on 2.4 mg. The SmPC lists 7.2 mg as a maintenance dose with these conditions, not an automatic next step. If there is no additional improvement in body weight, the prescriber should reduce the dose to 2.4 mg once weekly. Doses above 2.4 mg are not recommended for adolescents. Depending on the prescribed device, a weekly 7.2 mg dose is one 7.2 mg injection or three 2.4 mg injections; if given in the same body area, injections must be at least 5 cm apart. Both Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide, but they are different products with different licences. Wegovy is licensed for weight management at a higher dose (a usual maintenance dose of 2.4mg weekly). Ozempic is licensed only for type 2 diabetes (up to 2mg weekly).
