Can I start with my own GP?
You can raise weight-management treatment with your own GP. HSE guidance describes obesity medicines being prescribed by a doctor when appropriate. Ask whether your practice offers this assessment and ongoing care, or whether it recommends another service. Neither a BMI result nor a paid assessment settles which treatment, if any, is suitable for you.
Check the individual doctor and dispensing premises
For a doctor practising in Ireland, request their Medical Council number and open the full register record, including any conditions or restrictions. The Council warns that a name-only search can miss a registered doctor. Separately check the dispensing pharmacy's name and address on the PSI register. Match the actual premises, not just the chain or website name; registration alone does not establish stock, price or the service offered.
Confirm pharmacy choice before the prescription is issued
Ask the prescribing service which pharmacy choices it supports, how to request a change, and whether the receiving pharmacy accepts its prescription format. For example, HealthHero currently describes electronic prescriptions through Healthmail to Republic of Ireland pharmacies, with partnered-pharmacy requirements for initiation. It says prescriptions cannot be sent outside the Republic. This is that provider's published process, not a rule for every service or a guarantee of transfer.

Ask what documents, fees and follow-up are required
Before booking, ask for the service's identity-check requirements, assessment steps and any measurements or supporting records it needs. Request separate first-consultation, repeat-review, medicine and delivery charges, plus the refund terms if no prescription is issued. If changing provider, ask what treatment records it requires and who will handle ongoing clinical questions. GLP-1.ie cannot transfer a prescription or approve a repeat.
